While inflation, supply chain disruptions, and labor shortages are commonly cited as drivers of escalating food prices, food waste within the supply chain also plays a significant role. In the United States, over $400 billion worth of food is discarded annually. This waste not only represents a loss of valuable resources but also contributes to higher consumer prices. Grocery stores often account for these losses by incorporating them into product pricing, effectively passing the cost of inefficiencies onto shoppers. Addressing food waste through improved supply chain management and increased investment in waste reduction initiatives could alleviate some of the financial burdens on consumers and promote a more sustainable food system.
